Struan Teague’s paintings claim a quiet victory for poetry over clamour. His touch and feel for paint and pastel, the way he values intuition over orchestration, is unusually rare. They are paintings with a deeply personal quality to them - a privacy, that is less about concealing process or hidden content, rather these paintings revel in the musing and notations of an open spirit.
In the end it is their unlikely marriage of fragility and assuredness that is so compelling. The combinations of drawings and photographs offer an insight into Teague’s process, building intuitive and abstract visual structures out of close observation with everyday surroundings. The automatism of lines, scratches, gestures, small dabs of colour on textured ground, and off-center compositions open up new spaces of possibility that resist critical dogmatism, conceptual rationalism, and language as mere communication.
