Description

Tuda Muda (Delhi, India, 1991) lives and works in Trondheim, Norway.

Tuda Muda creates a body of work with focus on visual imagery that is representative of contemporary times and collective experiences. A recurring strategy within her practice is the use of self as medium within a medium, as a narrator/protagonist/performer/storyteller in a video/drawing/installation/sculptural format. She uses her own experiences as a starting point, only to invite and include others with similar experiences. Themes of loss, perseverance, and resilience have been underlying tones in artist work, but she would like to introduce ease, joy, humour, and hope as means to propagate, and manifest breakthroughs (for herself) as well as others.
This work, like most of her works comes from the field of thoughts of practicing gradual acceptance of self. In a moment of solitude or sometimes loneliness, these drawings become a visual journal where the love for self and its slow discovery is documented one work at time. Using self-portraits as a medium within a medium, the female gaze presents how it perceives itself in charcoal, experiencing vulnerabilities, where the body is a symbol of disgust and conflict but also newly accepted complexities, comfort, and abundance. The soft rolls of skin and sharp shadows overlap each other forming an illusion of body armor, as if protecting and healing a bruised psyche, hiding traumas in the form of secrets.

The series is reminder for those who forget to extend compassion for themselves and are unable to see themselves in the same light of empathy as we do for others.

The embrace of self is of new discoveries, and hopeful recoveries, and the nuances that make us who we are, both outside and inside.

"The hateful words inwards and outwards have little power when my gaze observes its reflection with a hint of kindness, and that smallest gesture begins to emit a light at the end of the tunnel. Ultimately, who else can love me the most, if not myself?"
